A Westmeath man who attacked his relatives at a sports stadium bar after an elite boxing tournament has been given a two and a half year suspended sentence.

With the busy schedule of National League games and Kiltane’s and Castlebar’s run to All-Ireland club finals, I have had very few column inches to discuss the importance of ‘the club’ and how GAA clubs have been severely hit in the last number of years. Charlestown, like every other club in the county, have lost lots of players to emigration because of the downturn in the economy. The only exception to the rule may be Kiltane, who had 44 players togged out for a championship game last year. However Shane Lindsay was commuting from Scotland pretty much every week.

First things first, The Battle of Bellaghy white collar boxing event between Charlestown GAA and Curry GAA held in the CBD complex in Charlestown was another phenomenal success and I am sure the coffers of both clubs are well boosted after it. I have played in many a big game down the years and would consider myself reasonably calm and in control given a particular situation, but boxing is a different animal. I had a week from hell in the lead up to the event, I could not sleep properly and was extremely anxious and nervous for pretty much the entire week, none the less, I took part, took my beating, and have very sore ribs to prove it. I would suggest for anyone who thinks I am off my trolley, to sign up for an event to see what I am on about, as every fighter on the night were pretty much petrified, even the good boxers. The box is ticked and at least I am alive to tell the tale. Note to self; you are never doing it again.

Although it is only round three of the National league on Sunday when Mayo take on Kerry, it literally is a league defining match (There will be more on rounds of a different kind later on). The winners of the game have a chance of making the semi-finals; the losers are staring relegation in the face. Mayo have had some good results against Kerry in the league in the last number of years and no question they will not fear them particularly with Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper sidelined for the year . It is sad for us as footballing fans that we will not see the eight-time All-Star in action this year however I am sure there are many a manager and defender quietly delighted they will not have to endure the full wrath of his skills in the summer of 2014. Cooper’s last championship game, last year’s All-Ireland semifinal against the Dubs, was arguably one of his best in a Kerry jersey. I was secretly hoping Kerry would win that game as I felt Mayo would have had a better chance against them in the final. Kerry are under transition at the moment and very regularly line out with players we have not really heard of just yet, so now is a good time to play them.

The boxers from Ballina shared the wins in their own competition last Sunday afternoon, picking up seven victories from 14 bouts in a competitive afternoon of boxing. The Ballina competition was the second last tournament before the Mayo championships and there were a number of boxers honing their craft in the Dick Hearns centre before the county championships. Caroline McDonagh was awarded the club boxer of the season award and the 12-year-old looked impressive in her fight win over Molly Rowley from Swinford in the girl two 39kg category.

If all 2,500 of Mayo’s season ticket holders make the trip to St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge, they will take over almost half the capacity of the Lillywhites home ground on Sunday. While it is not expected Mayo supporters in that number will make the trek east on Sunday a very healthy number of supporters will be on hand to see the latest update of James Horan’s Mayo make their proper competitive debut of the year, after the shadow boxing of the FBD League. There were three boxing tournaments held in Mayo last week in Ardnaree, Achill, and Castlebar and this weekend they keep coming with tournaments hosted by Ardagh Boxing Club in Hiney’s tonight Friday, January 17. That will be followed by a Geesala Boxing Club tournament in the High Chaparral on Saturday night and a Charlestown Boxing Club tournament in CBD Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The 2013 Mayo Novice championship and underage tournament commenced last Saturday in the Peter Callaghan Centre Westport.
