Last Saturday night saw an epic night of music come to Castlebar as the Finbar Hoban Presents series bought Ireland’s up and coming band Dirty Epics to Bar Ritz, Kicking off the night in spectacular fashion local band Orphan Alien bought their unique sound of heavy rock music, sounding at times very much like Rage Against The Machine with lead vocalist Shane Cunningham sounding very much like Zack de la Rocha. Look out for more from Orphan Alien in the future as the boys plan to play more shows around Castlebar in the future and are also heading back in to the studio to record new material in the coming months.

Thankfully I know I am not alone in this one; just ask any second level teacher who teaches lads.

IN RECENT years Galway’s theatre scene has been enlivened by a steady flow of young talent emerging from NUI Galway, its MA programme in theatre studies in particular. Mephisto, Dragonfly, and Fregoli have all managed the transition from campus to city with aplomb and made their mark with notable productions.

Hardy Bucks is a web-based comedy series gaining notoriety among comedy-hungry You Tube users. It is currently in the final four of RTE’s Storyland competition, having made it through two rounds of voting. The series follows the lives of Eddie and Buzz, two ‘sturdy, reliable fellas’ from the fictional Mayo hamlet of Castletown, as they struggle to hold down a job, while dabbling in various money-making schemes, all the time faced with their own incompetence, and having to contend with their arch-nemesis ‘the Viper’.
