The Spanish Institute at the Granary Learning Centre will host an evening of free demonstrations, wine, and tapas at Cava restaurant tomorrow (Friday) as the institute launches its cultural programme 2009.

I am often asked whether drinking organic wines will stop certain reactions like redness of the face or nasty headaches. These are some of the reactions that certain people get when drinking wine and it is not very pleasant I’m sure. First of all, the theory: ‘organic wines’ have to be made from 100 per cent organic grapes. This is important as if you see a label that says ‘made from organic grapes’ this may mean that only 70 per cent or more organically grown grapes were used in the making of the wine. Organic wines are grown without any manmade pesticides or fertilisers. Historically there were tons and tons of this stuff used, and there are legendary tales from the wine regions about fertiliser salesmen who became very wealthy unloading disgraceful amounts of this stuff with sales pitches where they told each grape grower how their neighbour was using so many tons per hectare, etc. Organic wineries do not add bags of oak chips to add flavour and they use only a very basic and traditional method for making the wine.

O’Brien’s Wine Beer and Spirits has announced the opening of its newest store at the Galway Shopping Centre.

Fiori di Zuca, which means pumpkin flowers, is a new venture from four women, three from Italy and one from Ireland. They describe it as a friendly and creative Italian café which is open seven days a week from 10am to 7pm. It is located at the end of Lower Dominick Street near the river and at the rear of the building that houses the new indoor market. Having chatted to Barbara and Roberta I think they may have just the right formula for the times we live in.

The Cases Wine Christmas Wine Fair will take place on Thursday November 5 at Cases Wine Warehouse on the Tuam Road. More than 120 wines from 20 importers will be available for tasting on the night, with the all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. There will also be cheeses to sample from Seamus Sheridan and plenty of live music and craic. Last year’s event was a sell-out, raising more than €2,000 for Enable Ireland, and this year Peter Boland of Cases hopes to better that figure. This week I have a few different items to mention and would like to suggest that it might be a good time to shop around for Christmas wine. There are some really good deals available now and also watch out for some up and coming wine fairs such as Cases Wine Fair on the Tuam Road. It is on today (Thursday) from 6.30pm to 10pm and the €20 ticket will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. There will be 120 wines to taste and cheese from Sheridan’s. As wine makes a really acceptable present I suggest you make an early Christmas present list and note anyone who would like a bottle or two or indeed a full case! If you are buying a pretty expensive wine for a wine lover, ask the advice of the wine shop’s most senior person and usually you will be well advised.
