A Westmeath councillor has expressed concern about future development in some of the county’s smaller towns. Cllr Denis Leonard said he was worried that towns and villages like Kinnegad, Rochfortbridge, and Ballynacargy may be deprived of vital services in the future purely because their populations aren’t large enough.

Some 15 sporting clubs and organisations across the county are to benefit from over €450,000 of funding under the Government’s Sports Capital Programme.

While the senior final might be stealing most of the headlines, for the young footballers of Moate and Athlone the only game that really matters on Sunday throws in at 1.45pm when both sides contest the Minor A championship final. This all-south final is sure to draw a decent crowd in its own right as both clubs have a strong footballing tradition but have been starved of success in recent years.
