When you hear the word stroke, does it fill you with dread and fear? Maybe that is because someone you know or love is affected by the condition. Or perhaps, fortunately, you do not have first-hand experience, but are aware of the statistics surrounding it which make worrying reading. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Ireland with 2,500 stroke related deaths occurring each year. It is also one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide.

Lack of traffic calming measures poses ‘serious threat to life’

There is a “serious threat to life” caused by the complete lack of adequate traffic calming and safety measures in the immediate vicinity of schools on Threadneedle Road, according to Galway City West and Knocknacarra councillor Donal Lyons.

Higgins urges motorists to expect deer crossing this autumn

Jim Higgins MEP for the North West has today warned motorists of the increased dangers this time of year with deer crossing roads and motorways. Jim Higgins, a member of the Transport Committee at the European Parliament said: "The deer signs remain in place all year round, so motorists used to travelling the same road in their daily routine might be blinded as to the presence of these warning signs. However in the coming weeks, there is a heightened chance of coming into contact with deer while driving."

Care needed when placing election posters

A spate of election posters have popped up thoughout the county over the past couple of days, and with local and European elections approaching the Road Safety Authority is reminding campaign workers of the need to take care when positioning election posters at the road side.
