The weekend buzz

In my lifetime I cannot ever recall such a momentous sporting weekend as the brilliant one we had last weekend. It was a mix of everything, with Mayo under 21s getting the weekend off to a great start with their impressive disposal of the Rossies in Charlestown. The big event of the weekend was, undoubtedly, the Irish rugby team’s clash with Wales in Cardiff Arms Park. To cap it off Bernard Dunne completed the perfect weekend for Irish sport by winning a world title in the early hours of Sunday morning at the new O2 in Dublin. There was a fantastic buzz about the place all this week as a result of these performances. It’s a pity in a way that Bernard Dunne happened to be in action on the same day as the Irish rugby team. Their sensational victory earlier in the day had us in such a spin that we almost forgot that we had the little Neilstown lad fighting for a world title. His incredible winning performance, I felt, was overshadowed by the boys in green who had made their own bit of history earlier in the evening. But either way it was mighty stuff.

The Home Countries International Masters Cross Country races take place this year at Singleton Park, Swansea in South Wales on Saturday November 15. Following the Irish Masters team trials, which were incorporated in the Gerry Farnan five mile XC at the Phoenix Park last week, two Mayo AC athletes have been selected on the Irish team. They are Ronnie Naylor from Ballina and Carracastle's Tom Hunt. Both of them were part of Mayo AC's gold medal winning Masters team in the National Half Marathon Championships in Waterford last month, and were also individual medallists, Ronnie winning silver in the O50 category, while Tom won bronze O60.

Moylette brings home the gold

News last week of St Anne’s Boxing Club’s Ray Moylette’s progress through the early stages of the World Youth Boxing Championship to guarantee himself a medal was greeted with joy and pride. But as the weekend progressed the remarkable young boxer kept the good news coming all the way to the gold medal.

Luckless weekend for footballers of Westmeath and Roscommon

Last weekend will live long in the memory of all Irish sports fans. First our grand-slam rugby heroes and then Bernard Dunne wrote their names into the history books. In doing so they gave the whole nation a timely lift. Unfortunately things didn’t run as smoothly for the football fraternity in both Westmeath and Roscommon, with both counties crashing out of their respective u21 championships, and both senior sides also being turned over.
