County football quarter-finals on this Sunday

Following a hectic weekend of football action last Saturday and Sunday, three of the county football quarter-finals are down for decision this Sunday. There is a double header in Pearse Stadium with Carraroe taking on Milltown at 3.45pm and Salthill/Knocknacarra facing Moycullen at 5.30pm. Claregalway, who saw off NUIG last weekend, take on championship favourites Corofin in Tuam at 5.30pm. The outstanding quarter-final between Tuam Stars and either Cortoon Shamrocks or Mountbellew/Moylough and Micheal Breathnachs could not be fixed due to the ongoing shenanigans with Mountbellew/Moylough’s appeal.

Ladies under 16s capture Connacht title

The Galway under 16 ladies football team regained the Connacht title by beating Mayo on a scoreline of 5-15 to 1-13 at Hyde Park in Roscommon on Wednesday. The half time score was 3-08 to 1-09 and it was anyone's game but Galway stepped up a gear in the second half and came away comfortable winners. They now take on the Leinister champions, Dublin, in the semi -final on the weekend of August 13/14.

Club football championship resumes this weekend

Fourteen of the 16 teams left in the county championship are scheduled to be in action this weekend. There is a double header at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening with the other five games fixed for Sunday. The Cortoon Shamrocks and Micheal Breathnachs fixture cannot go ahead as Mountbellew/Moylough continue with their ill thought out appeal process. They have been beaten twice on the field of play this season already and they should just move on from those defeats. Four of Sunday’s games are down as double headers at Corofin and Tuam, with Carraroe and Annaghdown on in Pearse Stadium. There will be extra time in any of the games that end in a draw.

Tuam native nearing completion of 1,330km fundraising walk

This Sunday a Tuam man will arrive home to his native town after undertaking a gruelling challenge to raise funds for Pieta House. Setting out almost three months ago with no accommodation booked, Colm Farrell has walked the 26 counties of Ireland. Armed with just a rucksack, map and iPod on his departure on May 7, Farrell has relied on the generosity of the public to put him up for the night over the course of his 1,330km journey.
