Newport's Francis Sheridan wins cycling club league

The 2010 club league organised by Western Lakes CC and Covey Wheelers Westport was another resounding success, with 105 participating over 10 rounds; this year the Tri Lakes triathlon club took part and added to the racing. Under-16 cyclist Francis Sheridan, who is having a brilliant year on the bike, won the overall league title with two impressive performances in the final rounds. Francis lives in Shramoor and usually has the longest drive to get to races but this didn’t deter him from travelling or winning. This is the third year of the league and the first time a Westport cycling club member won.

The west should be awake on Saturday

The intermediate football championship has been a graveyard for many a man who tried to predict the eventual winners of the competition for many a year. This grade is often so evenly matched that the vast majority of the 16 sides which start off at the beginning of the year could end up with the Sweeney Cup. The final four this year all can lay legitimate claims to being in with a very good shot of claiming the title, and by Saturday at 7pm we should know the final pairing. Things get under way at the county grounds when Burrishoole and Kiltimagh go head to head at 4pm, with Tourmakeady and Belmullet rounding off proceedings at 5.30pm.

Tough swim for Mask challenge

The annual Lough Mask swim challenge is complete for the second year and yet again proved its title as a challenge. Conditions were very testing and on the borderline of being rerouted to the plan B swim, however the nod was given after consultation between organisers and safety crew. The die was cast and the 8km Lough Mask challenge was the swimmers and kayakers Rubicon, from Paddy’s Pub Tourmakeady to Cushlough Bay, Ballinrobe.

Lough Mask swim challenge this Sunday

image preview

The second Lough Mask swim takes place this Sunday September 5 and again will prove a tough challenge and a great goal for swimmers from throughout the country. The swim will start on the shores of Lough Mask outside Paddy’s bar in Gortmor, Tourmakeady, at 1pm sharp, the swimmers will swim diagonally across the lake passing Devenish Island on the way to Cushlough bay some 8k away. Last year strong winds and big swells made the going tough for the swimmers and kayakers, with just 14 of the 25 swimmers braving the conditions to make it across. This year the change in direction should suit the prevailing winds from the southwest which are normally prominent at that time of year.

Outpouring of sympathy following death of legendary actor Mick Lally

There was widespread outpourings of sympathy this week following the death on Tuesday of Tourmakeady native Mick Lally. Lally, who was 64, died in hospital in Dublin on Tuesday following a short illness. His funeral service took place in Newlands Cross crematorium chapel at 2pm yesterday, Thursday. He is survived by his wife Peggy and three children, Saileog, Darach, and Maghnus.

Mick’s spirit will live on in Druid

Tonight when the floors of the Druid Theatre in Druid Lane fall silent, and when the last vestige of light is squeezed out by the arriving night; and when the last lock has been bolted, there will be heard a cough, a clearing of the throat and that chuckle, the head thrown back, and an “arragh shure.”
