Fine Gael Ballina Town councillor Mark Winters demanded answers why a motion he submitted to the town council to change the standing orders of the meetings to include an item called either engineers report or questions was ruled not valid by the council.

With four councillors from both county and town councils across the county running in the General Election today, the possibility exists that a vacancy will occur in one of the local authorities.

The elected members of Mayo County Council were forced to vote in a new member of the local authority to sit on the governing authority of the National University of Ireland, Galway this week. The vacancy on the governing authority at the third level institution came about after the council executive received correspondence from the university which informed them that Cllr Henry Kenny who had been appointed to the authority was “deemed to have resigned his seat”.

Despite ending their contract with Airtricity in December, Athlone Town Council has moved to reassure members of the public that any public lighting which is not working will be fixed as soon as possible. Repairs to lighting are currently being undertaken on “an ad hoc basis” by local contractors, it emerged this week.

The elected members of Ballina Town Council are to get an up to date progress report on the situation regarding the take over of estates in the town following a motion proposed by Fine Gael councillor Michelle Mulherin this week. Cllr Mulherin told the meeting there are a number of estates in the town that have a variety of issues to be sorted out before the council will take them in charge, and that the members do not know what these issues are. She said that it gets frustrating when residents come to councillors for advice and to see how things are progressing. “We need a baseline to work from, so we can ascertain where these estates stand at the present,” she said.

The issues involved which have caused a delay in proceeding with the art house cinema for Galway are due for discussion between all interested parties soon.

Tom Welby is not among those who think that Independents candidates will be an irrelevancy at Election 2011. He feels Independents could have a significant role in the next Dáil, and in leading the way in reforming the Irish political system.
