Thirteen sports clubs from Westmeath are among a record 923 applicants from across the 32 counties to put their names forward for the 2010 Texaco Sportstars Bursaries. A previous Westmeath winner was Shoot ‘N’ Stars Special Olympics, Mullingar who won an award in 2008, which they used for improving the facilities for their club members.

A painting entitled ‘Fruits of the Season’ by Clare Lynch, age 16, a pupil at Loreto College Mullingar, and another entitled ‘Flowers’ by Caoimhe Smyth, age 10, from Gainstown Mullingar, caught the eye of Mullingar-born competition adjudicator, artist, and lecturer in the visual arts, Eoin Butler, during the judging of entries for this year’s 56th Texaco Children’s Art Competition.
