The 12th of July 2020 will remain long in the memory of the small band of local hurling enthusiasts from the Carracastle, Kilmovee, Ballaghaderreen and Charlestown area – the day that their club Caiseal Gaels - played their first adult hurling challenge game against close neighbours Tourlestrane of Sligo.

If they manage to make it all the way to the All Ireland final this year, the Mayo Senior Ladies will be playing the final in Croke Park on the Sunday before Christmas, the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) confirmed this week.

Championship action gets underway this weekend on the GAA fields in the county, with the Mayo Senior Hurling Championship throwing in with two enticing ties.

The Gaelic Football season got up and running last weekend on the local scene with the start of the Michael Walsh Leagues across the county.

This Sunday will see the Premier League season of 2019/20 brought to conclusion, 353 days after it kicked off on August 9 2019. It took 11 years before another Galway club, Kiltormer, would succeed, while Sarsfields, Athenry, Portumna Clarinbridge, and St Thomas have all having delighted hurling fans throughout the county, demonstrating the strength of the game in the west of Ireland.

To grace the playing field in an All-Ireland final at any level is an honour fortunate to be bestowed upon a select few participants.

The board of Athlone Town AFC has welcomed the recent judgement handed down by the Court of Arbitration of Sport quashing the 12 month suspension handed down to former goalkeeper, Igors Labuts, dismissing charges of match fixing imposed by the FAI.
