Local woman Marie Sammon comes from Coosan in Athlone, and had battled with her weight since childhood. She gained lots of weight while her four children were young and went on lots of different diets depending on the fad at the time, losing weight and gaining twice as much after. Naturally enough, she found this very disheartening.

Two years ago, Agnes Mulvihill from Coosan attended a medical appointment for a knee replacement, and was told that an operation posed too much risk as she was too overweight. The exact word they used was ‘obese’, and Agnes left the appointment mortified.

In January this year, Sara was very unhappy with her weight. She had a bad back which really hurt when she walked, yet despite this, she purchased new trainers and pounded the pavements of Athlone. She was in agony with her back, but thought that she had to starve herself and do tons of tough exercise to lose weight. After a week of this gruelling routine, she was horrified to discover that she hadn’t even lost a pound. She saw an ad for Slimming World in the Athlone Springs Hotel and rang the consultant Pauline, and told her how desperate and hungry she was! Pauline immediately assured her that she would never go hungry again, that at Slimming World she could enjoy all her favourite foods like fry-ups, curries, and her beloved carbs like pasta, rice, noodles, and potatoes.

For as long as he can remember, David was overweight. When he started secondary school, it spiralled out of control. He was buying lunches of white bread rolls with all the trimmings, chocolate, fizzy drinks, and sweets.

Usually someone might be offended to be called a loser but Sylwia is delighted. The proud 32-year-old has been named Galway’s Slimming World Greatest Loser 2014 because she has lost a fantastic eight stone.
