Carty remembered by former council colleagues

The late John Carty was remembered by his former colleagues on Mayo County Council this week, who met for the first time since the death of the former TD, senator, and county councillor. As a mark of respect the council adjourned its meeting following the completion of the statutory business.

A man of the people” and someone who “always endeavoured to do his very best” were just some of the tributes paid yesterday to the late John Carty, who passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 63. The former politician from Knock had served Mayo as Fianna Fáil TD from 2002 until the 2007 general election, and after that as a member of the Seanad from 2007 until 2011 when he decided not to run again. Prior to that Mr Carty had been a county councillor for the Claremorris electoral area. He is survived by his wife Kathleen and their eight children.

Gavin and Barrett clash over Castlebar jobs issue

This week has seen two Castlebar town councillors exchanging verbal punches over the issue of bringing jobs to the county town. Fianna Fáil councillor Blackie Gavin threw down the challenge to Labour Party councillor Harry Barrett to “get real on who is responsible for solving the jobs crisis in Castlebar”. Cllr Gavin said Cllr Barrett seemed to forget that his own party was part of the Government and could do a lot to solve the problem if it wanted to.
