Fifteen thousand new tourists to flock through Knock

More than 15,000 new tourists are expected for the west and northwest as Ryanair launches three new services from Glasgow, Eindhoven, and Kaunas to Ireland West Airport Knock this week. The launch represents yet another significant milestone for the airport and western region as it provides the first scheduled direct air access to the Dutch and Lithuanian market. It also opens up access to the Benelux region of Europe, which has a population of some 28m people with the new Eindhoven service providing convenient access to Belgium and Luxembourg.

Mayo clubs pay the price for county success

With the busy schedule of National League games and Kiltane’s and Castlebar’s run to All-Ireland club finals, I have had very few column inches to discuss the importance of ‘the club’ and how GAA clubs have been severely hit in the last number of years. Charlestown, like every other club in the county, have lost lots of players to emigration because of the downturn in the economy. The only exception to the rule may be Kiltane, who had 44 players togged out for a championship game last year. However Shane Lindsay was commuting from Scotland pretty much every week.

They came a long way to be there. The sons and daughters of Erris converged on Croke Park from all corners of the globe and all corners of their rugged and beautiful outpost on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. While their family, friends and supporters travelled great distances to be in Croke Park last Sunday, the distance the men who togged out in blue and gold traveled was further. From the despair and desolation of their dressing room after losing their prized senior status, to the confines of Croke Park last Sunday, it has been some journey.
