Learn physics, the science behind technology

This new physics course uses an engaging hands-on method for teaching physics to develop the student’s basic understanding of the subject. The student can then use this knowledge to sit the higher level Leaving Certificate physics exam. The course is designed to help students work in teams to explore how the world works by creating experiments to test their ideas.

Greenwave 2010 experiment looking for Mayo schools to participate

Mayo schools have been invited to take part in this year’s Greenwave project after 10 local schools took part in the project last year. The participating schools in 2009 included Quay National School, Quignamanger; Creggs Road, Ballina; Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Brid, Ballycastle; Holy Family National School, Glenhest Road, Newport; Corclough National School, Corchloch Beal An Mhuirthid; Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Feichin, An Crois, Claremorris; St Joseph's National School, Greenpark Road, Killala; Newtownwhite National School, Ballysokeery, Ballina; Cloonlyon National School, Charlestown; Killocraun National School, Castle Hill, Ballina; and Scoil Náisiúnta Chluain Luifin, Ballinrobe.

Last call to enter SciFest

Mayo post-primary students are encouraged to get their entries in quickly for this year’s SciFest ahead of the deadline of Friday March 12. Last year Mayo student Aoife Bell from St Joseph’s College, Castlebar received an Intel Excellence in Science medal for her project entitled ‘Caffeine: A help or hindrance’. Entry forms for SciFest 2010 are downloadable from the website, www.scifest.ie

Call for entries from Westmeath for schools competition

Westmeath students are invited to enter two competitions for Science Week this year. Discover Science and Engineering (DSE) is holding an essay competition for primary and secondary schools students and is running a separate photography competition for secondary school students.   

Local primary schools to receive Awards of Science Excellence

Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) has announced that six Kilkenny primary schools will receive an Award of Science Excellence this year as part of the Discover Primary Science programme. The awards programme which is organised by Discover Science & Engineering acknowledges the efforts of primary school children and teachers who have demonstrated an increased knowledge of science and its many applications.
