Ireland West Airport Knock last week launched its first scheduled flights to a European destination, outside of UK, as Ryanair commences a twice weekly service direct to Alicante International Airport in southern Spain.

Chairman of Ireland West Airport Liam Scollan has hit out at proposals in the McCarthy Report which he says fails to put the spotlight on the considerable level of State largesse provided to the State’s own regional airports, Cork and Shannon, and focuses instead on the much less significant funding interventions made to the so-called “regional airports” (Waterford, Kerry, Galway, IWA Knock, Sligo and Donegal).

Mr Scollan has also argued that the report supports the status quo which sees the State airports cushioned by taxpayer handouts and by imposed levy payments from competing independent airports, thereby ensuring that an inefficient, inequitable and ultimately taxpayer-supported aviation system will continue.

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline has announced a three-times-a-week service from Ireland West Knock to Leeds Bradford Airport. The new route will commence on March 30 2010 and it will complement Ryanair’s existing network of routes at Ireland West Knock which include daily scheduled services to London Luton, London Stansted, and Liverpool John Lennon airports, in addition to the four-times-a-week services to East Midlands and Bristol International and the twice weekly service to Alicante which commenced in June. This latest expansion by Ryanair at Ireland West Knock will bring an additional 59,000 seats a year.

Slightly later than advertised, despite Ryanair’s usual record of arrival before time, the familiar figure of Michael O’Leary strode into Ireland West Airport Knock last Tuesday morning with European flag in hand, which he quickly draped over the podium at the head of the room. Along with O’Leary was European Transport Commissioner Antonio Tanji. The two men on first glance appear as strange bedfellows for the Yes campaign, especially when Commissioner Tanji constantly mentions his support for passenger rights in relation to air travel, something that O’Leary tells the assembled crowd is something he will vehemently fight against.

Ireland West Airport Knock has benefited from a fallout between Ryanair and Shannon Airport. Due to Shannon’s refusal of Ryanair’s offer to keep four aircraft based in Shannon, Ryanair decided to switch the popular Faro (Portugal) route from Shannon to Ireland West Airport. Shannon’s loss is Knock’s gain and the new route is a welcome addition to IWAK’s ever expanding selection of routes.

Ireland West Airport Knock has been Ireland’s fastest growing international airport in recent years and is the only international airport located to serve the BMW region.
