Dodgy diesel costs us millions

The last three years or so have seen a big increase in diesel laundering. Fuel smugglers have been making out like Al Capone during Prohibition.

Can Ming the Merciless save our turf cutting heritage?

I have been watching the progress of Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan with some amusement, and admiration for a number of years. Amusement because of his long running campaign to legalise cannabis, which has to be a no-hoper. He has been convicted on several occasions for possession of the drug, but undaunted, he sent a beautifully rolled cannabis cigarette to every politician in the Oireachtas as part of his campaign, pleading for them to enjoy a smoke, inhale deeply, and support his cause. That man doesn’t know the meaning of ‘no’.

O'Mahony steps down after Longford defeat

The second time around is never as good as the first, while John O'Mahony's first tenure in charge of Mayo ended in 1992 contentious conclusions, his second term ended at the lowest possible ebb for a side who were considered by most to within the top ten sides in the country. Longford came into the game on the back of a defeat at the hands of Louth in the championship, and two wins in the national league against the minnows of London and Kilkenny. Cannon fodder they should have been for a team which reached the division one league final, while the defeat is hard to take, there is only one way from here for Mayo and that is up.

Fox goes Black

Congratulations to Paul Fox from the Athlone Taekwon-Do School who received his Black Belt last weekend after an 18-year martial arts odyssey. Paul was put through his paces by Senior Master Anthony Phelan (8th degree) at the Republic of Ireland Taekwon-Do Association’s second biannual black belt exam in Dublin. The martial artist originally started training in Bray in 1990 and took a scenic route through several Taekwon-Do schools before settling in Athlone in 2005.

The case for the defence

Thirteen years on from a bounce of a ball hopping over the bar and a one for all brawl in front of the Hill, Mayo will renew acquaintance with Meath in the championship looking for their first win over the Royal County since the heady summer of 1951. When the final whistle is blown on Sunday, the initial headlines will probably go to the forward who puts the ball over the bar for the winning score or kicks a handful of points over the 70 minutes. But no matter how good the front six are all victories have their foundation on those whose primary job is to stop the other side from putting the size five over the black spot or into the back of the net.
