The RNLI this week released its annual report which showed that they brought almost 1,300 people to safety last year nationally. In Mayo both the Achill and Ballyglass lifeboats rescued 48 people over the year, with the Achill based lifeboat was launched 29 times to rescue 30 people and the Ballyglass lifeboat rescuing 18 people. So far this year the Ballyglass station has launched its boat twice, on Friday January 3 at 6.49am and on Saturday January 11 at 1.35pm. The Achill lifeboat has not been launched so far this year.

A new Atlantic 85 lifeboat for Clifden RNLI is to be officially named ‘Joyce King’ during a ceremony at the lifeboat station in the Connemara town at 2pm on Saturday November 9. A young woman was seriously injured after she struck rocks on Wednesday afternoon while cliff-diving at Maxwell’s Leap at Old Head, near Louisburgh. The Achill Island Lifeboat was dispatched to the scene at 4pm and used the ‘daughter boat’ from the rocks below the cliff to transfer the woman to the main lifeboat before she was airlifted to Mayo General hospital by the Coast Guard helicopter which was dispatched to the scene from Shannon.
