The final 2014 litter survey for 2014 produced by the business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has seen Ballina retain its status as a clean town, but has seen it drop to 33rd position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities surveyed.

Local councillor John Keogh has welcomed new dog litter bins in the Monksland/Bealnamullia areas of Athlone. “I’m pleased to see that dog litter bins have been put up. I have been a long time trying to prevail on Roscommon County Council to put these up, thankfully it has now happened. Dog foul is extremely dangerous to young children and can cause a host of medical complaints... I hope that the erection of the dog litter bins will now encourage owners to clean up after their dogs,” he said.

IFFPG, the national farm plastics recycling scheme, is providing some 200 bring-centre locations nationwide this year where farmers can recycle the full range of farm plastics. Farmers are advised to bring their silage plastics loose to the bring-centres. The rate this year for silage plastics is €12 per half tonne with the label code. This represents the most cost efficient recycling service.

WEEE Ireland, the Irish compliance scheme for electrical and battery recycling, is holding three free recycling events in Galway this Saturday, April 5. Attymass National School scooped this year’s Repak/An Taisce Recycling Primary School of the Year award despite tough competition at the 2013 Repak Recycling Awards which took place in The Westin Dublin last week. Attymass National School is a five teacher school located near Ballina with a total of 60 students. A comprehensive review carried out by the committee highlighted the need to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill through intensive waste minimisation practices and a drive toward recycling and composting. Overall, a 77 per cent reduction in the number of plastic bottles was made, a huge achievement to the school.

Figures released by Rehab Glassco – Ireland’s largest glass recycling company – to mark Repak Recycling Week ( September 30 to October 6), show that in the first eight months of 2013, 42 glass bottles and jars were recycled per head of population in Mayo. This figure is just above the national average of 41 bottles and jars per person.
