New hygiene and infection prevention inspection reports published yesterday by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) have found that poor hand-washing practice in Portiuncula Hospital is potentially putting patients at risk of acquiring a Healthcare Associated Infection.

The hospital group responsible for running public hospitals in Galway and Roscommon has cleared a waiting list of almost 14,000 inpatients over a nine month period.

New state-of-the art equipment, which has been installed at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, means the facility can now expand the range of minimally invasive surgical procedures available to patients in the catchment area of east Galway, Roscommon, the midlands and mid-west.

Steps have been taken to prepare for increased numbers of patients attending the emergency department at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, according to HSE West which this week moved to reassure the public.

There are more than 46,000 people currently on waiting lists for outpatient appointments at Galway University Hospitals but that figure is dropping every week, the HSE has said in a statement.
