Knock gets ready for influx of pilgrims for annual novena

The village of Knock is preparing for an influx of up to 120,000 to 150,000 people next week during the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock - which will run from Monday, August 14, to Wednesday, August 23. The annual novena at the Marian Shrine is one of the biggest events to draw people into the county each year and this year is no different. This year is the 40th year of the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock, the original intention behind the Novena was to recognise the unique role that Knock has to play in the life of the Irish church. The theme of this year's pilgrimage is 'Living Life to the Full' and there will be a number of guest speakers, and daily workshops along with services taking place over the nine days of the novena. Ceremonies will take place at 3pm and 8.30pm and workshops at 12 noon and 6pm each day.

The Galway Solemn Novena, will begin this Monday 15 February and run until Tuesday 23 February, with over 10,000 expected to attend over the nine-day celebration. To facilitate parking for Novena Gaol Road, along the Southern and Western boundaries of Galway Cathedral will be temporarily closed. An alternative route is available along the Eastern boundary of Galway Cathedral. Local access will be maintained at all times. Advance diversion signage will be in place prior to work commencing.

Knock getting ready for massive influx of pilgrims for National Novena

Knock Shrine in Co Mayo is getting ready for a massive influx of up to 150,000 pilgrims for the annual National Novena, which starts today, August 14 and continues for nine days. This year’s Novena has an international flavour. The Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, will be in Knock Shrine on Friday to perform the official opening of the nine day programme. His Eminence is leading a group of some 170 pilgrims from the Archdiocese of New York, who arrived to Mayo on Sunday morning as part of a historic first chartered pilgrimage flight by Aer Lingus between New York and Ireland West Airport Knock.
