The festive period is behind us and already people’s thoughts are turning to what the political year ahead will bring, and already we have drama in the North and the usual post-Christmas crisis in the hospitals.

THE VERY cream of Galway and Irish rock, indie, singer-songwriter, and electro talent will ring out 2016 and welcoming in 2017 from the stage of the Róisín Dubh for the venue’s marathon New Year’s Eve bash.

And so the curtain falls on another lively year of Galwaytheatre in which both home-based and visiting companies provided much to savour and, as is the way of things, some misses as well as hits.

The year 2017 sees a new exciting team at Junior Chamber International Galway. For the next five years, European eyes will be paying close attention to the very edge of Europe’s western edge in environment, gastronomy, and culture, as Galway becomes centre stage of Europe’s social and community epicentres.

AHEAD OF their performances at the Cleansing Lights Festival in Munich this weekend, Ten Ton Slug and Weed Priest - two of the county's finest metal bands - will play a show in Galway city on Thursday.

A two-piece music group from Holland will be making a welcome return to Ireland and playing a few gigs in Mayo this coming Bank Holiday weekend. After a hugely successful visit last year, there is great excitement at the thought of the band belting out the tunes again.

Primary schools across Mayo are to participate in a new daily initiative, The Daily Mile, which will improve the physical, emotional, and social health and wellbeing of all children and help in the battle to combat obesity. Mayo GAA stars Lee Keegan and Cora Staunton joined children and staff in Snugboro National School Castlebar last week to launch this programme which has its origins in the UK.

The 20th Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, Ireland’s flagship festival for children and families, has been under way all week and there is still plenty to catch this weekend. Festival organisers are encouraging families to make a day of it and to enjoy the full Baboró experience which includes shows, workshops, and free exhibitions.

Following rigorous judging, a county Galway food business was named among the top seven winners in the 2016 National Organic Awards. Some 278 individual products were submitted in the Awards, a record high level of entries.

There’s lots of fun to go around at Baboró which starts next Monday October 17 and runs until Sunday October 23. While the kids are busy seeing shows, exhibitions and generally having lots of fun, there’s plenty for the grown-ups to check out too.
