At around midnight on New Year’s Eve last, I stood with friends and family and listened as the bells of St Nicholas rang out across Galway City, their wonderful peals soaring high into the night sky, hanging there and waiting until the ship’s horns in the bay answered their call. It was a fitting moment; the juncture of the civic and maritime, two key attributes of the city over many centuries.

What is tempo running and how do I do it?

One of the most important aspects of my training is what is known as tempo running - the idea is to run at a pace for an extended period of time that is quicker than your normal running speed, but not so quick that it is your race pace. Nature, for reasons best known to herself, seems to favour shades of yellow and pink. That is, I am sure there are botanists and scientists who know why this is, but I only know that it is so. Check out the wildflowers growing by the roadside or in fields – they are still looking fabulous even in late August here in the west of Ireland – and you’ll see what I mean. There are plenty of pinks, yellows and whites, but apart from the odd vetch scrambling up a blackberry bush, blues are few and far between. And even the vetches are mostly mauvey - purple.
