We are down to almost the last week of this General Election campaign and for arguably the first time in many campaigns, it genuinely is all to play for in the five seat constituency of Galway West.

Fifty candidates are competing for 18 seats across the city's three electoral wards, but in reality, only half that number can truly be considered contenders. While the city is not expected to make sweeping changes to the make-up of its local government representation, some new faces are likely to feature when the new council meets in June.

"A colossal waste of money" is how city councillor Máiréad Farrell has described Galway University Hospital's decision to spend €3.5 million in the past eight years on hiring private ambulances. She said the money should have been used instead to buy new ambulances for the Galway hospitals (University College and Merlin Park).
