Today's the day when the people of Mayo get their chance to have their say on the future direction of representation of the county in the Dáil. A total of 92,315 people are eligible to go to the polls today in Mayo with 200 having already voted on the islands yesterday, where there were 121 eligible voters on Clare Island, 29 qualified voters on Inishbiggle and 50 registered voters on Inishturk. The 92,315 eligible voters in Mayo represents a drop of 8,645 from the 2011 General Election, with the majority of those votes in the south Mayo region now being cast in the Galway West - South Mayo constituency. The number of eligible voters does not include postal voters or special voters. The figures were released by returning officer Fintan Murphy on Wednesday afternoon, and he will be the man who will be running the show in the count centre in Castlebar on Saturday when the boxes are opened at 9am.

Fine Gael candidate in Mayo, Michelle Mulherin TD, has received confirmation from An Post that there will be no closure of post offices in Swinford, Charlestown, and Kiltimagh, arising out of changes proposed in the arrangements for mail sorting.

Mulherin welcomes Crossmolina company's plan to create fifty new jobs

Fine Gael candidate in Mayo, Michelle Mulherin TD, has welcomed the news that Crossmolina-based company Churchfield Home Services is to create a further 50 jobs in the town. "Churchfield Home Services employs 10 people in Crossmolina and is involved in the home and business retrofit market in Ireland in partnership with regional retrofit installers. The company’s home improvement services include everything from home insulation, electrical, heating, windows and doors, flat roofing, and guttering services. This is a hugely innovative company that I have been glad to support. Its managing director, Noel Rowland, has been nominated for an Irish Construction Award in the Innovation in Construction category. With State supports, Noel Rowland has created 10 jobs in Crossmolina and with continued support he plans to create a further 50 jobs in the short term," said Mulherin.

The nomination process closed for the upcoming general election yesterday at noon and there are 16 people putting themselves forward looking for your number one vote on Friday, February 26 when you go to the polling station. In total there are nine political party candidates, three Fine Gael, two Fianna Fail and one each from Sinn Fein, Renua, Anti-Austerity Alliance/People Before Profit and the Green Party along with seven independent candidates on the ballot paper.

Taoiseach hands in nomination papers

Shortly after 9am this morning, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny handed in his nomination papers to contest the upcoming general election. The Taoiseach was joined by his party colleagues Minister of State, Michael Ring TD and Michelle Mulherin TD who also submitted their nomination papers for the election. 

New fire station for Crossmolina — Mulherin

Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed confirmation that Crossmolina is to get a new fire station. "I have been pursuing the issue since my election with former minister Hogan and current minister Alan Kelly. Former councillor Eddie Staunton had brought it to my attention and I visited the premises and met with the fire fighters to see for myself," said Deputy Mulherin this week.

Mulherin welcomes extension of small business flood relief scheme

Mayo Fine Gael TD Mayo, Deputy Michelle Mulherin, has this week welcomed the decision by the Minister for Defence Simon Coveney, to expand the criteria for eligibility for small businesses affected by recent flooding so that they can make a claim under the temporary emergency humanitarian support scheme which is being administered by the Irish Red Cross.

This weekend saw the Labour Ard Fheis in Mullingar. It was a fine turnout with Joan Burton the star at the Leader’s Speech. Throughout the weekend there is no doubt the local hero was Willie Penrose – a long-time serving Labour TD for Longford-Westmeath.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this morning confirmed that the general election will take place on Friday, February 26. The Taoiseach made the announcement this morning in the Dáil before he departed to go to Aras an Uachtarain to ask President Michael D Higgins to dissolve the 31st Dáil.
