The chief executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, has said he will give the members of the council a full report on the progress of the project once the tenders for the project have been opened. He told the monthly meeting of the authority on Monday he expected to be able to give that report in either December of January.

The organisers of the Crossmolina 1916 centenary parade have put a call out to all family members of 1916- 1921 volunteers, past and current serving members of An Garda Síochana, Prision Officers, Army, Navy, and Air Corps from the north Mayo area to come along and parade in their uniform in their celebration.

The 2015 Martin Sheridan Bursary awards were presented by the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Holmes, to the recipients recently at the Martin Sheridan Memorial Community Centre. A fascinating exhibition on the women who fought for Irish independence has just been launched in Castlebar Library. The exhibition, highlights as it says “What did the women do?” through the stories of Cumann na mBan and the role of women in the cultural, literary, and ultimately political revival of the decade from 1912 to 1922.

The seemingly innocuous matter of Mayo County Council nominating someone for the Pádraig Pearse Award took a long time to get sorted out over the course of two meetings of the local authority this month. The item initially came up for decision at the March meeting of the council which was held last Monday week, March 7 but was adjourned after both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had nominated An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Dep Éamon Ó Cuív  respectively.

The imminent introduction of pay-by-weight charging for the collection of domestic waste is leading to an increase in the number of people illegally disposing of waste, a number of members of Mayo County Council said this week. The issue regarding the changes in how people will be charged for their waste disposal will become a very big issue in the coming months before its introduction in July of this year, according to a number of councillors, with the Cathaoirelach, Cllr Michael Holmes, saying: "It will become a much bigger issue than Irish Water was."
