Flynn tops Mayo expenses claims charts

Fianna Fáil TD, Dep Beverly Flynn was the top expenses claimant of the seven national representatives from County Mayo over the months of March and April, it was revealed this week. From now on TDs and senators expenses will be published online on the Oireachtas website on a monthly basis. Tuesday was the first day that the expenses were published. Deputy Flynn was also the only one of the seven Mayo Oireachtas representatives to submit vouched expenses for which she received €10,091.68 for the two months or €5,045.84 each month.

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has presented a major report on the redevelopment of the west of Ireland to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The report, entitled “Awakening the West: Overcoming Social and Economic Inequality”, is the first report of its kind in decades and has been put together after a major consultation process involving dozens of groups along the western seaboard.

Speaking on the second stage of the Defence (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2009 in the Seanad this week, Fine Gael Longford/ Westmeath Senator, Nicky McFadden, said any cut to the Defence Forces’ budget, which allows troops to be adequately trained and facilitates them with the most up-to-date equipment, must be avoided at all costs.
