Independents Day in Mayo County Council

While those in the United States will be celebrating Independence Day tomorrow, it was 'Independents Day' in the chamber of Mayo County Council last Monday, when Independent councillor Michael Holmes was elected as the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the next 12 months. Cllr Holmes' election to the role of first citizen of the county came about through a post election pact by the 10 Fianna Fáil councillors in the council and five of the independent councillors who were elected last June.

Local authority finances to the fore next week

It is going to be a busy few days for the county councillors and town councillors across Mayo next week as Mayo County Council and the three town councils sit down to thrash out their budgets for the coming year. For businesses across the county the news that none of the four local authorities is looking for a increase in the commercial rate it levies will be welcome news as they head into the next year, with Castlebar Town Council actually proposing to cut its rate.

Students prepare for Our School’s Got Talent Mayo County final

The excitement is building ahead of this Friday night’s Mayo County final of Special Olympics’ Our School’s Got Talent in association with Supermac’s. This year’s competition has already showcased a wealth of talent throughout the county and now just 25 acts from 15 different schools in Mayo remain, all hoping to clinch a place in the Our School’s Got Talent Connacht final. The Connacht final will take place on Friday December 2 in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar.

Huge interest in Harlequin Adventure Duathlon

Castlebar has now got a unique event of its own its called the Harlequin Adventure Duathlon, it will be held on Saturday March 26 with a start time of 9am. This race is a mix of running, cycling, and mountain running, very much like the famous Gael Force event which has proven to be a big hit in the Leenane/Westport area. Now Castlebar can boast about an event of its own with equally stunning and challenging terrain.
