McGarrity named in side ahead of Galway showdown

image preview

The news that Ronan McGarrity had been selected to play in Sunday’s Connacht Senior Football Final (subject to passing a fitness test on Sunday morning) against Galway in Pearse Stadium was a major boost for Mayo when John O’Mahony named his side on Wednesday evening. The Ballina midfielder looked to all intents and purposes to be out of the game after he picked up a fractured cheekbone in Ballina’s Mayo senior football club championship clash with Crossmolina almost a fortnight ago.

Moran gets the nod for Royal clash

There was only one real surprise when John O'Mahony announced his starting line up for this Sunday's clash with Meath in the All-Ireland quarter-final in Croke Park. Castlebar's Barry Moran, who was expected to miss the game with a broken bone in his hand, was named at full forward. Moran, who picked up the injury in training last week, was expected to be sidelined by the hand problem for a number of weeks. But in a similar turn of events to what happened when Ronan McGarrity suffered a facial injury in a club championship match in the lead up to the Connacht final, he seems to have healed quickly enough to be given the nod.

image preview

The first of the major adult county titles will be given out on Saturday when Tooreen host Ballyhaunis in the Mayo Senior Hurling Championship final, with the TJ Tyrell Cup at stake. The men in red and black have been the premier force in Mayo hurling for the last decade, picking up their fifth title in seven years last year with a 0-15 to 2-7 win over their opponents. The last time Tooreen won the county title was back in 2003 and since then they have been on the coat tails of their neighbours.

Kiltimagh claim Connacht junior crown on bad day for ladies club sides

Kiltimagh claimed the Connacht Junior Championship in Charlestown on Sunday afternoon after a hard fought 0-11 to 0-10 win over An Spidéal from Galway after extra time. In the club's 121st year it was Adrian Forkan who was the hero for Mick Regan's men, Forkan landed a point from over 40 yards out to seal the win for the east Mayo men. Kiltimagh looked to have the game under control early on and led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break, but the Galway men came back at them and Brian Gallagher had to score a late point to level the game up at 0-9 each at the end of normal time.

Council did not seek injunction against McHale Park development

During a discussion on the development row at McHale Park at last week’s Castlebar Town Council meeting, Mayor Michael Kilcoyne told the meeting that he was disgusted that the council did not seek to get a High Court injunction following the breach of a warning notice issued by the council.

County board convention sees walk out

There were plenty of Christmas decorations in the Castlecourt Hotel last Monday night, but there was a lack of Christmas cheer from some corners of the convention. The show kicked off with a hour-long debate between the members of Moygownagh and Ardagh and the top table over the issue of voting rights. Both clubs had combined together to play in this year’s junior championship, but both clubs were still under the impression that they would retain voting rights as individual clubs at the convention. They were told by the county board they would not, as to have a vote at convention all clubs have to have played at least one championship game during the past year, but since only Ardmoy (the combined team) had played Ardmoy would get three votes between the two clubs.
