Two Mayo students, Sofia Ferdini and Ruth O’Connor of Mount St Michael, have taken part in the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad finals, the search to find Ireland’s top young decoders at Dublin City University. The best performers at the national finals in DCU will be selected to represent Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad in Manchester in July 2013.

Yet following the prolonged executions of the leaders, the massive round up of participants, and their imprisonment in Britain, a change of attitudes swept the country. This was perfectly illustrated in the election held on a bleak December day 1918. Sinn Féin had fielded candidates in every constituency. The campaign was vigorous and tough.

A Mayo tourism weekend promoting the 270 forthcoming Gathering events in the west of Ireland has been hailed as a resounding success by organisers. The weekend was staged during this year’s opening weekend for the 2013 Manchester Irish Festival, which is Europe’s biggest Irish festival with some 200 events staged during its 10 day festival (www.manchesteririshfestival.co.uk). Tickets for a series of concerts and plays sold out in advance and it attracted more than 2,000 visitors.
