Life for employers must be made easier in north west - Ganley

Jobs and investment will not return to the north west without real reforms at national and European level, businessman and European candidate Declan Ganley has said. Eleven counties, four provinces, 13 candidates and only three seats

One thing is for sure about the European election count on Sunday is that all eyes across the EU will be on The Royal Theatre, Castlebar when the ballot boxes are opened thanks to one man’s name on the ticket, Declan Ganley. The Galway man and Libertas leader has emerged as the most controversial candidate in an election in Ireland for years. Ganley and his Libertas group’s anti-Lisbon Treaty campaign last year lead the charge for the no-vote on the treaty in the country and his party has now gone pan-European in these elections. If Ganley fails to take a seat in this election, where does his or his party’s mandate go to in the expected re-running of the referendum later this year? We will have to wait and see.

I can take no for answer, I'm a democrat and I love my country.”

Sleeping or meditating - what’s the difference?

It’s Thursday afternoon, another paper almost published, and the eyes are getting heavy. The office is hot and stuffy, whispered conversations almost soothing. A little snooze would be nice but that’s not an option. At least not before 6pm when the home time bell chimes.

‘I never wanted to be Dana’, O’Leary tells Knock on Yes campaign stopover

Slightly later than advertised, despite Ryanair’s usual record of arrival before time, the familiar figure of Michael O’Leary strode into Ireland West Airport Knock last Tuesday morning with European flag in hand, which he quickly draped over the podium at the head of the room. Along with O’Leary was European Transport Commissioner Antonio Tanji. The two men on first glance appear as strange bedfellows for the Yes campaign, especially when Commissioner Tanji constantly mentions his support for passenger rights in relation to air travel, something that O’Leary tells the assembled crowd is something he will vehemently fight against.
