Six job-searching tips for new graduates

You’re fresh out of college, just got the results (congrats) and now the real world beckons. Chances are you will soon be facing your first serious job interview. That has prompted Liam Horan, Career Coach, Sli Nua Careers, to compile these six simple tips.

Let your STAR shine by making your answers relevant to ‘Them’

Competency-based interviews are not quite all the rage, but they have certainly grown in popularity and the indications are that they will continue to become more commonplace, writes LIAM HORAN, CAREER COACH, SLI NUA CAREERS.

Why your CV needs to know where it’s going

Q: I’m a jack-of-all-trades in my work. I do everything and anything yet sometimes when my husband asks me what I did all day, I don’t know what to say. My job title is Marketing Executive, but, in reality, I do a whole lot more than that. I quite like the fact that my role is so varied, but I am worried about how it can all make sense on my CV? (AG, email).

Give yourself a hand (or two) during interview but don’t look rigid

Q: When I was in school, I was told it was crucial to sit still in job interviews. Hands down by my side, feet planted firmly on the floor. That was then: now, I’m 44 years of age and I am a, shall we say, expressive speaker: I move my hands, I shrug my shoulders, and I incorporate various other movements and gestures when speaking. Whenever I go for a job interview, the advice given to my 17 year-old self continues to ring in my ears and I find myself defaulting to it – your thoughts, please. (DO, email).

Help your teen make the right career choice

If you’re a parent agonising over how you can help your son or daughter decide what to do upon completing school, you can take some consolation from the fact that you are not alone. In fact, this topic is the subject of a new book – ‘Career Coach’ – that is, as the tagline says, “a step-by-step guide to help your teen find their life’s purpose.” It also includes interviews with 13 successful people, including such as garden designer Diarmuid Gavin and chef and restaurant owner Neven Maguire, who share their own career insights.

Three views on making a meddling manager redundant in the interview process

Q: I am going for a middle management interview with the group business development manager. We don’t really get on, mainly because I disagree with how he goes about his business – to be blunt about it, he’d sell his granny. I want the job, but am not sure how I should handle the fact that I do things differently. Any suggestions? (LR, email.)
