Q: I started a new job six months ago – but I hate it. I feel totally constrained in it: I worked in a very similar role before, but with a different company, and the two companies are like chalk and cheese. Before, the attitude was try, try and try – and if you failed, so what, you’d learn from it. Here, caution is the byword. Nothing ventured, nothing lost. I’ve applied for a few new jobs and next week I have an interview – how do I explain the fact that I’m leaving this job so quickly? (DP, email).

Q: I’m about to start a college work placement with a leading company in my sector – marketing. It’s an eight-week thing during and I really want to make an impression. Any thoughts? (DR, email).

Q: I live in a remote region. I have a job interview early next week - I haven’t done one in years and wasn’t much good at interviews the first place. I am really worried about this one as it is a job I really want to get – jobs like this don’t come up very often in this area. ‘Get some interview training’ is the advice I am getting online – my problem, however, is that because of my location, and family duties over the next few days, I cannot travel to meet somebody. Q: I have been hearing a great deal of late about ePortfolios. Some people I know have them and are adamant I should have one too. They work in graphic design and architecture – my area is teaching. Do you see any value in it for me – I have to say that I struggle to see how one could help me?

Q: On a number of occasions in your column, you have mentioned that an interview is like a sales process. I’m a salesperson, but I still struggle to sell myself in a job interview. I fail to see the connection. Could you elaborate on what you mean?
