Roscommon and Galway need to up their game for Connacht final replay

The senior footballers of Galway and Roscommon will head to McHale Park in Castlebar next Sunday to battle it out for the Nestor Cup (3.30pm) after drawing last weekend’s Connacht final on a score-line of 0-13 to 1-10 in Pearse Stadium. Both teams will go in knowing that they have the criticism of many GAA pundits and fans - some of it unjustified - rebounding from social media, print outlets, and the national wireless and TV.

Galway can build on Mayo victory and defeat Roscommon

When we narrowly defeated Roscommon in the Connacht final in 1998 after a replay, it was a bit of luck that made the difference between two evenly matched sides.

Galway footballers did the business in McHale Park

There was a genuinely eerie feeling at McHale Park last Saturday evening around 8.30pm. Galway had just beaten the home side by 1-12 to 0-12 and large numbers of Mayo supporters just sat in the stand numbed and perplexed by what had happened.

Rochford made his first big statement

Stephen Rochford made his first big statement as Mayo manager wielding the axe and cutting nine players from his panel. Michael Conroy being the most high profile of these. Mickey C as he is effectively known gave a great service to the Mayo jersey but has been blighted by injury of late. His last major contribution for Mayo was scoring four points against Kerry in last year's National league game in Killarney after coming on for the injured Evan Regan, Conroy also picked up an injury up the same day.

New York footballers almost do a Leicester City on Roscommon

All week long we have heard truly terrific accounts of how Leicester City and Claudio Ranieri shocked the soccer world by winning their first Premiership title. From almost being relegated last season, to beating hands down the enormously high spending teams in the league such as Manchester City, Man United, and Chelsea with a collection of off-cuts and rising talents is a tremendous achievement and once again proves what can be achieved by any group of sports players, in any code, if they really knuckle down, start believing in themselves, and get some fair winds behind them.

It's time for Mayo to stand up and be counted

In any other league campaign Roscommon defeating Mayo wouldn't bother me. We could use the usual excuses like Mayo were tired after a long campaign last season, Mayo tried out new tactics and tried to blood players while trying others in different positions. We could all tell ourselves that the game was Roscommon's All- Ireland, why wouldn't they be up for it?

Mayo entering must win territory this Sunday

Over the past few years, Mayo haven’t really faced a must-win game until summer had really kicked in and summer holidays were in full swing. But this Sunday in the middle of the Easter break, Mayo are staring down the barrel of a must-win game of football or Division Two next year is becoming a very real possability.
