New learning experience for GMIT business students on Dail visit

Business students at GMIT enjoyed a trip to Dail Eireann recently as part of an ongoing programme of student engagement with civic society and business organisations, arranged by lecturers Clodagh Geraghty, Michael J. Shovelin, Shane Byrne and Caroline Clarke, Department of Business, GMIT Castlebar.

Finbar Hoban presents at Bar Ritz a huge success

Finbar Hoban presents... at Bar Ritz last Saturday week was a huge success with Kneel Before Zod plus support from local bands Hotrock and Struck. The night got under way with upcoming young band Struck at 8.30pm followed by the extremely talented Hotrock at 9.30pm. There were lots of give-aways on the night before the main event which saw Kneel Before Zod take to the stage at 11pm and amaze the crowd by playing cover versions from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, Thin Lizzy, and a blistering cover version of Black Sabbaths “War Pigs” which thrilled the massive crowd.

Getting the youth vote out

Low turnout in elections is usually blamed on apathy from the franchised youth in the country who don’t bother to make their way to the polls. Apart from those who will always have an interest or those raised in a dyed in the wool political household, getting the younger generation involved in politics is no easy task. Who is to blame? The political parities, the media, education or the politicians themselves. There is no easy answer to a complex question. But on the ground moves are being made by the political parties to capture the youth vote and generate interest in politics in the run up to next year’s elections.

Get ready for a rocking Christmas at Bar Ritz

This Christmas at Bar Ritz Finbar Hoban Presents…to you a feast of live entertainment when on December 27, local bands will perform live at Bar Ritz with the Surrogate Band (full electric Pink Floyd tribute) along with support from another local Mayo band the Zen Yetis, and then on New Year’s Eve December 31, The Massive Alternative New Year’s Eve Alternative Rock Party with the following line-up: Music For Dead Birds, Hoovers and Sledgehammers, the Funeral Suits and headliners We Should Be Dead. Basically it will be the best of the Finbar Hoban series 2008 and more. Limerick group We Should Be Dead make a welcome return to Castlebar before they plan to take on America in 2009, During their trip to the States earliear this year they met up with a lot of influential and connected people who are eager to work with them, the band are looking forward to heading over in early January to record their second album in between extensive touring for the next 12 months.
