After a brilliant first half display, Galway fell asunder under the pressure of Kilkenny’s grip in the second half as the Cats ran out four point winners on the scoreboard. Joe Canning’s late consolation goal closed the gap back to four, but in reality Kilkenny were much further ahead at the end that the scoreboard suggested.

Cycling home from work in Galway city to Moycullen on Tuesday evening, the same car passed me three times in the ongoing traffic jam that has existed at the edge of the Connemara village for the past nine months.

After the stunning victory over Tipperary in the All-Ireland senior semi-final and the euphoria of that win and  the minor success over Kilkenny, it was tempting to believe Galway were going to have it all their own way for the next few weeks in intercounty hurling.

The Galway players worked exceptionally hard all over the field last Sunday to harvest a terrific and inspiring victory. There was a real steeliness to the entire performance which was fantastic to see.

The Galway u-21 hurling panel, including senior stars from last Sunday's wonderful win over Tipperary, Jason Flynn, Cathal Mannion and Conor Whelan, will head to Semple Stadium this Saturday for the All-Ireland semi-final against Munster champions Limerick (6pm).
