Mayo groups to receive funding for safety of older people

Pat Carey TD, Minister at the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, has announced funding of over €39,000 for a further 24 community and voluntary groups under the new Seniors Alert Scheme. In Mayo groups to receive funding are Fahy Community Alert Group, €279.90; Louisburgh Lecanvey Community Alert, €547.00; SVDP St Colman’s Conference, €2,458.00.

Reduced funding a concern for Údarás na Gaeltachta

The board of Údarás na Gaeltachta has expressed concern this week about the future of the authority, and also that of the Department of Community, Equality, and Gaeltacht Affairs, following revelations of a substantial funding drop in next year’s budget. Gaeltacht areas in Mayo supported by the authority are located in north Mayo, Achill, and Tourmakeady.

Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe

On the 1820 map of Galway, the site of the Taibhdhearc was part of the then Augustinian Church. When the present church was built in the 1850s the site became derelict. The late Ned Joyce remembered a large tree growing on the site, a tree which stretched across the street to a tenement known as ‘The Windings’. The occupants used to hang their washing on the tree on fine days.

Auditions at An Taibhdhearc

An Taibhdhearc are holding auditions for their next production, Boicíní Bhóthar Kilburn, the Irish language version of Jimmy Murphy’s The Kings of Kilburn Highroad which has been translated by Mícheál Ó Conghaile and will be directed by the talented Lara Campbell. Auditions will take place in Galway on Monday next, August 23.
