Captain Dara Fitzpatrick (45), who was recovered in a critical condition on Tuesday morning after the crash, passed away in hospital later on Tuesday. Ms Fitzpatrick, a mother of a three-year-old son, was spotted in the sea by the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter at daybreak on Tuesday and was picked up by the Achill based lifeboat and brought ashore.

A signal from the black box – belonging to R116 helicopter which crashed in the early hours of Tuesday morning, has been detected by rescue crews working to find the three crew members of the helicopter still missing since the crash . Lifeboat crews from Achill RNLI and Ballyglass RNLI took part in the Easter Sunday 1916 centenary commemoration which saw some 700 members of the Irish emergency services taking part in the State parade. Ballyglass RNLI coxswain John Walsh and Achill RNLI second coxswain Dave Curtis joined 50 of the charity’s volunteers and staff who came from lifeboat stations around the Irish coast and inland to parade through Dublin city centre to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising. Dave Curtis carried the RNLI’s flag for the charity in the parade.

The first ‘NUI Galway Mini Med School’ is taking place in January and February to encourage and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. The programme is aimed at Transition, 5th and 6th year students and will be run on campus on January 27 and February 3, 10, and 17 2016. NUI Galway Mini Med School is designed to give students a taste of what it would be like to study a healthcare-related degree at the University, while encouraging them to pursue their interests. It is the second initiative of its kind in Ireland along with the College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

Executive Helicopters have released a statement to address the ongoing issue regarding air transport to and from the Aran Islands. The company says helicopters are already the mainstay and air transport of choice to many offshore islands in open ocean conditions and give the example of the Tory Island service off Donegal coast, which has been operating since 1985 and is part-funded by the Department of the Gaeltacht.
