Broadband situation in Monksland deplorable

Despite reports that the Eircom Exchange in Monksland was supposedly broadband enabled, people in the area are still unable to get fixed line broadband from Eircom, that’s according to Cllr John Keogh, the local county councillor for the Athlone Electoral Area of County Roscommon.

Eircom called to replace eroded manhole covers

Fine Gael Town Councillor Ger Deere has proposed a motion for debate at the next meeting of Castlebar Town Council calling on Eircom to replace all of their concrete manhole covers. The recent cold spell has caused some of their older concrete covers to completely disintegrate, and the motion calls on Eircom to replace them as a matter of urgency.

Human rights group calls for suspension of Corrib gas project

Human rights organisation Afri is calling for a suspension of all work on the Corrib gas project pending an independent and comprehensive investigation of its safety, human rights, economic and environmental dimensions. Afri is asking people to sign a petition to that effect, which will be delivered to the government next month. The petition was launched by former UN assistant secretary-general Denis Halliday this week.

€36,000 funding for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services

Funding of €36,000 for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services based at Castle Street car park has been welcomed by the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD.  The funding has been issued by the Department of Health and Children as part of their 2009 allocation from National Lottery funds. The funding has been issued to aid in refurbishment work at the social services centre which provides numerous important services around the wider Castlebar area.
