FOLLOWING A successful run at the Hollywood Fringe festival where he picked up two awards for his show, The King of Soho and Other Stories, Jack Lukeman is back in Ireland for a nationwide tour that takes in Galway.

An interesting number of medical institutions were established in Galway in the 20th century. In 1908 the Port Sanitary Intercepting Hospital was built near the docks opposite Forthill Cemetery as quarantine for any suspected cases of cholera or smallpox that might have come in on board ship. It cost £1,000, had 20 beds, and happily it was never needed for its primary purpose and only ever housed three patients. It burnt down in 1966.

O’Donnellan & Joyce reports that 2016 was its most successful year to date regarding the volume of sales since the company opened its office in 1982. The Galway city centre estate agent reports that it sold close to 650 residential and commercial properties in 2016 by private treaty and public auction. Colm O’Donnellan, one of the principal partners of O’Donnellan & Joyce, said: “Prices are still about 35 per cent below the peak of the market of 2007 and the number of transactions recorded in 2016 is well in excess of anything recorded since the slump.”

And so the curtain falls on another lively year of Galwaytheatre in which both home-based and visiting companies provided much to savour and, as is the way of things, some misses as well as hits.

Fifteen kilometres southwest of Mayo's Mullet Peninsula, beyond the pillars of the Inishkea and Duvillaun islands, lies the isolated island of Blackrock. Appearing on the horizon like an abandoned vessel, this small, rocky, outcrop has been without a permanent resident for many decades, but the sound of the crashing waves and the constant coating of spray is a reminder of the horror that almost claimed the lives of three men in the winter of 1942-43 when the rock became the scene of a prolonged and frightening wartime siege.

Down Syndrome Galway's annual Christmas Fun Swim is taking place again this year on Christmas morning. The event is open to all ages and all levels of ability. Participants do not need to be a swimmer to participate, just be willing to walk, run or jump in to the sea on Christmas morning. Getting wet is what it is all about.
