St Joseph’s set for glory in cross country championships

Round one of the county Kilkenny cross-country championships was held in Ballycurran Cross on Sunday. The course, well marked out by officials from host club, St Joseph’s, was in good condition despite the heavy overnight rain. The weather was good and so were the results for St Joseph’s. Thirteen points from victory with boys under 10 and under 16 and girls under 18 combined with second place for teams in boys under 12 and under 14 set them up with a good chance to re-capture the juvenile shield which Kilkenny City Harriers have held for the last couple of years. Aughavillar is currently in second place with ten points but as they have a lack of athletes in the older age groups it would seem that they have a lot to do to catch St Joseph’s.

Locals perform well in national marathon

image preview

Running conditions were excellent as somewhere in excess of eleven thousand runners set off on the twenty-six mile plus that is the Dublin City Marathon. Local interest was strong as a considerable contingent of men and women from Kilkenny endeavoured to reach various targets. Most had been training several times each week for the last six months, building up stamina and strength for the big day. Completing the course, irrespective of time taken, would be the aim of many. Athletics’ leaders with Kilkenny Fit4Life Club, Irene Henebry and Teresa Daly, had excellent times of 3.43.47 and 3.53.44 respectively. They can take pride in the performances of their five club members who also completed the run : Bregeen Murphy and Deirdre Scott, both under 3 hours 50 minutes and Jacinta Horan, Ann Brett and Marie Poyntz just outside the four hours. All these ladies, now members of Kilkenny City Harriers were joined on the run by Sinead Foley, a Harrier with marathon experience on a number of continents. Sinead’s time was 3.49.06.

Championship action in Bramblestown Athletics

The county Kilkenny senior cross-country championships are scheduled for Bramblestown, Gowran on Sunday. The races are unlikely to attract national attention but for most of the participants, they will be of a higher profile than the Europeans. Last year’s ladies champions, Aughavillar, will want to retain the cup. They are likely to have strong opposition from St Senan’s, 2006 winners, Gowran, with a young developing squad and Kilkenny City Harriers. The city club had dominated this event from 1998 until St Senan’s changed the pattern in 2006. While KCH are without long-serving member Ciara Martin, they will still be hoping to get back on top. So an interesting race is in store.
