New agricultural working group set up

Mayo County Council has set up a new agricultural working group of 13 people to deal with agricultural issues in the county including, to provide a representative voice for farmers in Mayo in relation to national and European agricultural policy, to ensure that farmers are aware of opportunities to diversify in order to ensure viability in the future, and to review products produced by farmers in Mayo to ensure future viability.

Pádraig Pearse Award nomination divides the chamber

The seemingly innocuous matter of Mayo County Council nominating someone for the Pádraig Pearse Award took a long time to get sorted out over the course of two meetings of the local authority this month. The item initially came up for decision at the March meeting of the council which was held last Monday week, March 7 but was adjourned after both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had nominated An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Dep Éamon Ó Cuív  respectively.

Murray wants answers on landfill aftercare costs for the county

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray wants to know if Mayo County Council has made provisions to fund the aftercare costs of both landfills in Mayo which are due to close soon. Cllr Murray raised the issue at Monday's meeting of Mayo County Council and demanded a report from the council on whether it had built into the charges full disposal costs to waste collectors including aftercare costs, which he said he believed could be up on €750,000 per year for more than 30 years.

The agony and the ecstasy of Galway hurling

An elderly lady once told me that “Apart from the Irish language, we have nothing more Irish in this country than the game of hurling.” I agree. It is the greatest game of them all. It is probably the number one game in the county, attendances at senior county finals being a very good criterion — the hurling final has always been the bigger attraction than the football counterpart, “even in the balmy days of our football three-in-a-row,” according to the late Jack Mahon.
