The process of putting a master plan in place for the strategic development zone (SDZ) at Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) will take in the region of two years to complete, the elected members of Mayo County Council were told this week at their June monthly meeting which was held in Carancon Parish Centre. A total of €12,228.26 was paid in expenses by Mayo County Council to elected members to attend just two events last year. When it came to expenses for conferences, training and meetings in Ireland, a total of €72,438.85 was paid out to the members for 2016 who, according to the figures released, attended 201 conferences and training events between them, working out at an average of €360 per claim.

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray hit out at the sector saying: "There are people out there in a very serious situation and the only exit strategy they have is at the mercy of the likes of Respond and Clúid in the voluntary housing sector who have no interest in pulling people out of mortgage arrears, certainly in urban areas, and in rural areas especially."
