History can teach us lessons so that we are forearmed when facing situations, better informed when planning to proceed. The history of the long campaign to establish the Regional Technical College (RTC, now the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, GMIT) campus in Mayo contains, I believe, guidance on how the Castlebar based college can be rescued from those who oppose its survival.

Galway’s Corrib Canal and NUI Galway to feature in RTÉ documentary series

The final episode of the current popular TV documentary series, Building Ireland, will look at the Corrib navigation system and its canals, which aspired to transform Galway into a major industrial hub, as well as looking at how the National University of Ireland, Galway, came to be located in the city. The episode will air at 8.30pm on RTÉ One tomorrow (Friday) , and will be the final episode in the six-part series.

Mayo sets up Older Persons Council

An open invitation was extended to older people and to organisations and groups that represent older people, to attend a meeting in Lough Lannagh on Monday, last October 10, to progress the setting up of an Older People’s Council in Mayo. The Setting up the Older People Council is an essential component to the roll out of the Age Friendly Strategy which was launched by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny in June of this year .

At a presentation ceremony which took place at the start of the month in Aras an Chontae, Castlebar, the members of the Castlebar Community Development Association presented a cheque for €400,000 to Mayo County Council as the community contribution towards the National Outdoor Pursuits Centre which is being constructed by Mayo County Council at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. The outdoor pursuits centre which includes a state of the art swimming pool is the result of a partnership between Mayo County Council and the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.
