Team title for Ballina AC men’s team in Hollymount International Road Races

The Hollymount international road races took place last Sunday under the stewardship of Seán Reilly. There is always a high quality field in this race run over a course which encompasses three demanding laps to make the 10K distance in the men's race. The women's race is over 3K and was dominated by Mary Gleeson and her Mayo AC team mates. Ballina AC athletes Michelle Reynolds and her sister Ann Egan put in solid performances. They are used to much longer events but added the snappy 3K event to their repertoire.

Five decades on, the city tidy towns and garden competition in blooming good shape

The results of this year’s Galway City Tidy Towns and Garden Competition have been announced. The overall winner of the Front Garden Competition was Mary Crowe, Ballagh. First prize in the Front Garden - City Council Estate category was awarded to John Connaughton, St. James’ Crescent. The best first time entrant was Eileen Lennon, Renmore. The winners of the Best Window Boxes/Floral Display category were Carolyn Shiels, Oaklands and Bernie Comber, Blakes Lane. Seamus King, St. James’ Crescent won the Best Lawns category.

Westport 5k fun run and walk this weekend

This Sunday, August 22, Westport will host a 5k fun run and walk around the historic tourist town. The event is open to absolutely everyone of all abilities and will take place through the grounds of Westport House. The event starts at 4.30pm sharp at the North Mall, with registration taking place from 3.30pm in the same location. The course has been accurately measured, and is the ideal distance for families, walkers, Fit4Life members, and club runners. As part of Ballina Arts Centre’s redevelopment campaign to build a theatre for the town, a fundraising gourmet lunch was held in the Ice House Hotel on Heritage Day recently. Entrepreneur Seán Gallagher, from RTÉ 1’s Dragon’s Den was guest speaker at the lunch, while the food on the day was prepared by the Ice House’s award-winning head chef Gavin O’Rourke, in what is now tipped to become an annual attraction.
