Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Deputy Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed the €30 million Village and Town Renewal Scheme announced this morning by Minister for Rural Affairs, Anne Phelan which includes funding totalling €225,000 for three projects in Mayo.

A motion has been passed by Galway county councillors that effectively prevents Carnmore Airport being used to provide an air service to the Aran Islands in future. Fianna Fáil General Election candidate for Mayo Cllr Lisa Chambers says the Government’s Water Conservation Grant will actually end up costing Mayo taxpayers money and will do nothing to encourage people to conserve water.  Cllr Chambers made the comments after letters encouraging people to sign up for the grant arrived in the post last week.

Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has received confirmation from Irish Water this week that it has approved the replacement of the problematic water mains in the town centre of Ballina, which is an estimated €700,000 investment.

A number of elected members of the Claremorris Municipal District expressed their disappointment this week at how €440,000 in top-up funding for road works projects in the area was decided to be spent. Fianna Fáil Cllr Damien Ryan told the Mayo Advertiser yesterday: "Bar a very small corner near Claremorris, none of the money came to projects in the part of the district that is now part of the new Galway-West constituency for the General Election."

Ireland should be prepared to take in 10,000 Syrian refugees, with each parish in the State being willing to accommodate five families each, according to Independent Galway West Senator Fidelma Healy-Eames.

A meeting has been secured with An Post officials concerning the recent closure of the Post Office Agency in Cleggan. Local Fine Gael TD Seán Kyne has arranged the meeting to take place in Cleggan on Friday, September 18. Members of the local community council and a number of public representatives will attend.

If it is early September it must be political 'think-in' season, when each of the parties, in turn, descend son hotels in various parts of the country to discuss strategy ahead of the commencement of the new Dáil term.
