A group of students and staff from James Madison University, Virginia, USA, are due to arrive in Mayo today, Friday June 9 to take part in a summer study programme in collaboration with Lifelong Learning at GMIT Mayo, UCC and Waterways Ireland. The US group of three faculty members and 14 students majoring in biology, theatre and communications, are researching the cultural and environmental impact of water on our lives. As part of their studies and research they will take part in field trips and excursions right across Mayo in collaboration with staff on GMIT Outdoor Education degree programmes and the Lifelong Learning Department.

The future of GMIT's Castlebar campus has taken another twist this week as concerns for the future of the campus intensified. Fine Gael senator Michelle Mulherin said that she had been informed that a number of staff and students at the Castlebar campus had been asked to move to the Galway campus, saying: “I am very concerned that between 12 and 15 staff, at GMIT Castlebar have been asked via their union to transfer voluntarily to Galway within three to four weeks. Should they refuse, they will be added to the redeployment panel, and may be asked to transfer to any location within the higher education sector.

"The results of a recent staff survey shows massive support for ringfenced funding to secure Mayo GMIT, and we call again on an Taoiseach and, indeed, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, to secure the funding immediately," said Harry Barrett from the Mayo GMIT Action Group this week.
