Galway Traveller Movement will be welcoming the Chair of Ireland’s independent electoral commission tomorrow Friday, January 26, as Ms Justice Maire Baker visits the Ballybane Community Resource Centre to talk to Travellers from across Galway city and country about voting in the upcoming March 8 referendums.

An additional Dáil Deputy will represent the constituency of Longford/Westmeath, a proposed recommendation by the Electoral Commission has revealed.

Following the announcement this week that the Electoral Commission recommends the Mayo constituency be changed from a four-seater to a five-seater and that south mayo areas added to the Galway west Dáil constituency be returned to the Mayo Dáil constituency - reaction was swift from some political quarters around Mayo.

The announcement on Wednesday that Mayo has been recommended for a change-up from a four-seater to a five-seater Dáil Constituency, and that county boundaries be reinstated so that up to 6,000 votes from areas of South Mayo are returned to the electoral area, has well and truly started the ball rolling on General Election campaigning around the county.

Local Fine Gael Minister of State, Deputy Peter Burke, has called for sections of County Westmeath currently in the Meath West constituency to be returned to the Longford/Westmeath electoral area prior to a future general election.
