Parents of primary school children in the Ballinasloe and Roscommon areas have expressed mixed wishes when it comes to changing the patronage of their primary schools.

This week saw the results of a the Primary School Patronage Survey in 38 areas across the country. Two of the 38 areas surveyed were in Mayo — Ballina and Westport. The survey results showed the majority of parents in Ballina and Westport seeking alternate provision of school patronage indicated Educate Together as their first preference.

Parents of children in Ballinasloe and Roscommon are to be asked what patrons they would like operating their local primary schools.

Educate Together has welcomed the release of the results of the parental survey of primary school preference in Castlebar. Results show positive levels of support from Castlebar parents on having the choice of an Educate Together school in their community. In addition to Castlebar the pilot survey was also conducted in Whitehall (Dublin), Trim, Tramore, and Arklow during October and November.

Following the news this week that parents of pre-school and primary school children in Castlebar are being asked to participate in an online survey about the possible change of patronage of schools, Mayo VEC has come forward with details of a possible alternative to the Catholic Church patronage model.

Minister for Education and Skills Ruairí Quinn has outlined a process by which primary schools under denominational patronage, typically a Catholic Bishop, can be divested to another patron, such as Educate Together, to provide greater diversity of schools. The process includes a parental survey to ascertain the views of parents in the areas where these changes are to be considered. It will be piloted in 44 areas across the country, including Ballina, Castlebar and Westport, driven by the Department of Education and Skills. This process is expected to happen during October and November this year.
