According to the 2016 Census, there were over 643,000 people living in Ireland with a disability. That means 13.5 per cent, or one in seven people in Ireland with a disability. Data from 2015 told us that 132,000 people with disabilities were living in consistent poverty.

At the moment we do not have individual control of what is happening externally, however as a community we have 100 per cent control by doing what our Government and our health professionals are asking us to do. Alfie is a normal, fun-loving, eight year old boy. He was, however, born without a right hand. This prevented him from performing tasks such as using a scissors and holding things, affecting his confidence in the process. He did not like people asking him about it. According to his mum, Laverne, he was "reluctant to go out". This changed in May 2019, when Alfie, from County Down, travelled to APOS Kilcolgan to be fitted with his new Hero Arm.
